About the Author

  • Affiliation: University of California, San Diego and Northeastern University Bio: Dr. John Proakis is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego and a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. He was a faculty member at Northeastern University from 1969 through 1998 and held several academic positions including Professor of Electrical Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering, and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His professional experience and interests focus in areas of digital communications and digital signal processing. He is co-author of several successful books, including DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 5E (2008), INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, 4E (2007); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING LABORATORY (1991); ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (1992); DIGITAL PROCESSING OF SPEECH SIGNALS (2000); COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, 2E (2002); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB V.4, 3E (2010); CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING MATLAB, 2E (2004); ALGORITHMS FOR STATISTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (2002); FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (2005).
  • Masoud Salehi received BS from Tehran University and MS and PhD from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering. Before joining Northeastern University, he was with the Electrical Engineering Departments at Isfahan University of Technology and Tehran University both in Iran. During 1988-1989 he was a visiting professor at the Information and Communication Theory Research Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he did research in network information theory and coding for storage media. In 1989 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University. Dr. Salehi is the coauthor of the textbooks "Communication Systems Engineering," "Communication Systems with MATLAB," "Fundamentals of Communication Systems," and "Digital Communications." His main areas of research interest include information theory and coding.

  • Yan Zhu on November 17, 2012, "With 5th Edition, this book is over 1000 pages. Digital Communication is not like programming book (which is full of coding list). It is full of reasoning and math. I can't imagine any person can go through this 1000-page journey. Would it be a good reference/dictionary? Certain it is not except for its size...".
  • G. Arismendi on February 17, 2009, "I'm taking a graduate course of digital communications and using Proakis' book along with Sklar's one. The 2nd one is a very illustrative, book very interesting to read and easy to follow, but when you wanna go further you must go to Proakis' book. This is a more deep reference, who takes more emphasys on mathematical and stochastic models to explain why thing happens in digital communications. In this sense, this book is rigorous, and along with Sklar's book form a very interesting/complemented reference."
